Nationals-EUCR 2017 Update - Women and Mixed

The UKU Competitions Committee have been reviewing the details for format and schedule for the 8-team Women’s and Mixed division.

The most urgent information is that we have concluded that it is not necessary or appropriate to force the Women’s and Mixed divisions to play 3 days - so this announcement is a confirmation that play at Women’s and Mixed Nationals/EUCR-W will conclude at the end of Sunday 27th August.

We recognise that some players will have made arrangements based on the original information that the competition would require 3 days - but we also know that some teams/players have not yet done so.  We are also (now) aware that Monday 28th is not a bank holiday in Scotland and Ireland, and that this was in turn causing problems for some teams.

It was originally the case that we needed Monday for all three divisions, but one benefit of the enforced change of venue to Moor Lane, Birmingham, is that we now have more pitches.  We did not realise the implications of this until we were doing a final round of checks on the plan in the last week.  Rather than pretending that we need three days and creating unnecessary games, we concluded it was better to admit the mistake asap and announce the decision so that players could make adjustments to their plans if possible.

For the avoidance of doubt, the Open division is 3-days, and some of those teams will play 3 games on Monday 28th.

  • I would personally like to apologise for any inconvenience caused by the confusion.  The failure to notice that we could drop to 2 days after moving venues was entirely my fault (Si Hill).
  • The Women’s and Mixed finals will take place one after the other on Sunday afternoon/evening and we are minimising the number of other games taking place in parallel.
  • There will be an end of year celebration/dinner on Sunday evening at The Pavilion, Moor Lane (details to follow).  We hope the opportunity to celebrate/commiserate without a Monday morning game will be some sort of silver-lining.
  • We can make pitches available to any Women’s/Mixed teams that would like to train or organise scrimmages on Monday.
  • Entry fee in Mixed & Women’s will be lower than in Open.

The rest of this announcement contains information regarding the formats and bid allocation for EUCF 2017 and WUCC 2018 in the Women’s and Mixed divisions.

All teams should note:

  1. WUCC bid allocation is defined in Section E5 of the WFDF Rules Appendix - available here
  2. Additional waiting-list bids sometimes become available later in the year, and so it is worth competing to finish as high as possible, even if you know you will not qualify automatically.

Women’s Division

8 teams expected (7 UK, 1 IRE)

EUCF bids: 2

WUCC bids: 1-2 (2 expected)

We will definitely receive 1 bid to WUCC; whether we receive a 2nd bid will depend on the size of the Women’s division at WUCC versus the take-up of bids from all the countries that have the right to receive at least 1 bid, and the countries that are ahead of UK for receiving a 2nd bid in this division.

If the Irish team finishes in WUCC qualifying position, then the WUCC bid will be awarded to the next UK team.

Seeding in the Women’s division will be finalised and announced later.

Format

Phase 1: 2 pools of 4 (A=1,3,6,8 and B=2,4,5,7)

Phase 2: Semi-finals: 1v4, 2v3 and 5v8, 6v7

Phase 3: “Recovery” round for 3rd: 3v5, 4v6

Phase 4: Finals: 1v2, 3v4, 5v6, 7v8

Teams finishing 1st, 2nd, 7th and 8th will play 5 games; teams finishing 3rd-6th play 6 games.

Mixed Division

8 teams (7 UK, 1 IRE)

EUCF bids: 2

WUCC bids: 2-3 (3 expected)

We will definitely receive 2 bid to WUCC.  We may receive a 3rd bid depending on the size of the division versus the take-up of bids from other countries.

If the Irish team finishes in a WUCC-qualifying position, then the WUCC bid will be awarded to the next UK team.

Format

Phase 1: 2 pools of 4 (A=1,3,6,8 and B=2,4,5,7)

Phase 2: Semi-finals: 1v4, 2v3 and 5v8, 6v7

Phase 3: “Recovery” round for 3rd: 3v5, 4v6

Phase 4: Finals: 1v2, 3v4, 5v6, 7v8

Seeding is based on results from Nationals 2016 where the teams in those positions have “taken” that position to their Regionals.

IRE (Gravity) and N4 were drawn into pool A or B at random.

Additional Comments

All formats and schedules involve some trade-offs.  It is possible, but unlikely, that

  1. A team could finish 3rd without playing the team in 2nd
  2. The Irish team could affect the UK WUCC qualification

Solutions to those scenarios all involve introducing other compromises that we concluded were equally undesirable or worse.
