UKU Beach Nationals 2018

Event details: 

Beach Nationals will be held on Sandbanks beach on the 8th and 9th of September 2018 hosted by Bournemouth University and Sunburn Beach Tournament committee.

 

***Beach Nationals 2018 is now open for registration*** 

The planned format is a three division, 8-team tournament for Men’s, Women’s, and Mixed. However, if there are insufficient entries for a particular division then it may not go ahead, and other divisions expanded according to demand (eg. two 12-team tournaments). This decision will be made once the closing date has passed. Please note that accommodation is not available for this tournament, so consider this in your planning when arranging a team. A list of nearby hotels and campsites will be sent to entrants. 

 

Entry is made by emailing sunburn.bournemouth@outlook.com with the following information:

- Team name

- Contact Name

- Contact Email and Phone

- Secondary Contact

- Additional relevant information (previous beach tournaments entered, finishing position, player details)

 

The deadline for submitting a team is Monday 7th August. After this date, if over-subscribed, the entry rules will be applied to teams as outlined below. Selected teams will be required to make payment of £160, which will be detailed in their confirmation email.

 

ENTRY RULES

For tournaments that are over-subscribed at the closing date the following rules will apply, in order:

- First teams from clubs who have completed Club Affiliation to the UKU will have priority over those who have not

- Teams from clubs not on the blacklist (for late dropouts at previous UKU events) will get priority over those who are

- Teams finishing in the top 1/3 of places in any 2018 beach tournament will get priority over other teams*


If there remain too many teams - which cannot be separated by the above 
- for the remaining places, a lottery will be run for ONLY those inseparable teams, for those places.

 

Second (and lower) teams will only be considered if there are spaces after the closing date, and will be allocated spots according to date of payment.

 

*We're obviously not able to check that your roster is sufficiently related to the roster for that previous tournament under the same name - but please do apply some SotG to that.

***THE 'B-TOUR SOUTH' EVENT HAS NOW BEEN CANCELLED DUE TO NOT ENOUGH TEAMS ENTERING BY THE ENTRY DEADLINE*** A smaller Open event will also be run in parallel in the South to enable greater participation (B-Tour South).  This will be similar to to B-Tour South event held in 2017. Entry for this tournament will open on Thursday 3rd May until Friday 1st June 2018 for all teams. Teams are required to enter using the UKU Event Entry Form. You should enter the "UKU Club Open & Women's Tour 3 (14-15 July / £220) Birmingham/Edenbridge" event and then select your preference for EITHER BIMRINGHAM or EDENBRIDGE when filling in the form. 

We hope to be able to accommodate everyone between these two tournaments, but should the event(s) be oversubscribed at the time of the deadline, a set of allocation criteria to award spaces will be followed (outlined below).

When the number of teams exceeds the capacity, teams within the last-used criteria-group will be split according to the subsequent criteria:

  1. “Protected” teams [*1] (if applicable)
  2. “Invited” teams (GB, international, new/extremely local [*2] (if applicable)
  3. Teams assigned to the same region as the event [*3]
  4. Teams ranked in the top 32 teams UKU Tour 2017
  5. UKU-Affiliated clubs
  6. “Local teams” allocated to the other region, based on an algorithm that looks at relative distances between teams and the two tournament locations.  
  7. Remaining teams, in order of their total tour points from UKU Tour 2017
  8. Teams with no record from the previous year will be below those with a ranking, and will be separated by drawing lots should the need arise.
[*1] These teams are:Clapham A, Chevron Action Flash, EMO 1, Reading 1, Fire of London 1, Glasgow 1, Devon 1, Manchester 1, Ka-Pow!, Clapham 1, SMOG, Flump.  FOR THE AVOIDANCE OF DOUBT these teams are NOT guaranteed to play in the A Tour at all three events, they are simply guaranteed entry to that venue.


[*2] New teams, foreign teams, teams representing GB or much-changed teams believed likely by the competitions committee (based on e.g. known personnel or early season results) to finish in the top 24.  Teams whose participation the UKU Competitions Committee believe will benefit the growth of Ultimate – for example, but not limited to, local teams who may not yet be ready to travel to other tournaments, or teams based in underrepresented geographical areas.  


[*3] E.g. at OWT2 Cardiff, teams allocated to the “South region” will have priority.
 

If the tournament is full then the team(s) not allocated a space initially will be placed on a wait list to be awarded one should one become available due to a drop out. Although please note that late entries may be charged an additional £30 fine and any teams entering less than two weeks before any of the Tour Series tournaments may be fined an additional £50 by UKU.

We may be able to confrim/decline your entry earlier than the UK deadline.  

Once the entry deadlines for both international and UK teams have passed, there is no guarantee that any teams will be awarded a place. Places MAY still be available later on a first-come first-served basis if the tournament is under-subscribed, and if the additional team(s) would not adversely affect the schedule, but no team - no matter how strong - would be guaranteed entry; if the tournament is full then the team(s) will be placed on a wait list to be awarded a space should one become available due to a drop out. Although please note that late entries may be charged an additional £30 fine and any teams entering less than two weeks before any of the Tour Series tournaments may be fined an additional £50 by UKU.

 

We hope to be able to accommodate all teams at this tournament, however, if the tournament is oversubscribed at the time of the deadline, the following rules will apply, in order:

  • Teams finishing in the top half of the same event in the previous year will be given priority.

  • To fill any remaining spaces at the tournament, the remaining teams who have not already been awarded a place will be selected by random draw.

University Men's and Women's Outdoor Nationals 2018, along with the Alumni Cup, will be held at the Riverside Sports Complex, University of Nottingham, on the weekend of 21st/22nd April.

The venue doesn’t have its own postcode, but NG7 2SA will get you onto the right entry road. Follow it all the way to the end, even though it looks like it doesn't go anywhere much.

 

Entries will open on Tuesday 6th March and will close on Thursday 22nd March 2018 for the WOMEN'S division and the ALUMNI CUP. Entries for the MEN'S division will be from Tuesday 27th March-Thursday 5th April. Make sure that you enter before the deadline because teams have missed out on a tournament they qualified for due to not getting an entry in on time - BUCS are extremely strict on this. Don't forget!


 

This year we will once again host an amazing six divisions:

 

Men's UKU/BUCS Championships (a.k.a Division 1, 16 teams)

Men's UKU/BUCS Trophy (a.k.a Division 2, 14 teams)

Men's UKU/BUCS Conference Cup Finals (a.k.a. Division 3, 10 teams)

 

Women's UKU/BUCS Championships (a.k.a. Division 1, 16 teams)

Women's UKU Division 2 (No BUCS points available, but still a BUCS event - number of teams TBC)

 

The Alumni Cup (Space for up to 16 teams).

 


 

For the Men's teams, qualification was through the leagues (for those in 1A) or through the Conference Cup (for those in lower divisions). Hopefully you should know which division you qualified for - top 3 to Championships, next 3 to Trophy, and the Conference Cup finalists obviously go through to that division.

The one exception is that the best 4th placed team in the leagues goes to the Championships on points difference over the other 4th place finishers. This team should enter the Championships on BUCSscore.

ALL TEAMS DO NEED TO ENTER through BUCSscore, even though your fees are covered by your league fees. You don't need to pay - the cost is set to zero on the entry form - but you do need to enter. You athletic union staff will have to do this - you CANNOT enter yourselves. Go see them ASAP.

For the Women's teams, please enter through BUCSscore. Your athletic union staff will have to do this for you - you CANNOT enter yourselves. Go see them ASAP. The cost will be £155 as usual, and entries will close on the 22nd March.

Following the cancellation of all UWOR events, all Women’s teams are invited to the Nationals event, and the Regional and Nationals competitions will now be combined by creating a regional qualification competition which will take place on the Saturday morning. This will then determine which teams proceed to play in the Division 1 (BUCS) Finals and those that finish the weekend competing in Division 2. The full announcement and details of what's happening can be found here.

The Alumni Cup

Have you ever argued that your university team of 2010 was better than the 2005 team? Have you always wanted a re-match of a previous Student Nationals final? Well now is your chance! Gather together your mates and enter a team into the Alumni Cup.

Alumni cup will be an open division - obviously that means genuinely Open and not Men's; mixed teams are possible. To be eligible for an alumni team the player must have attended the institution for at least one year, on a more-than-half-time basis. The player does not need to have graduated from that institution - i.e. it's quite possible for current teams/players who didn't qualify for nationals to come along and play in the Alumni Cup. Universities may enter more than one team. All players must have basic UKU membership as a minimum - we will check some rosters at random on the day.

There is no qualification for this division. Teams must enter using the UKU Event Entry Form. Entries will be accepted on a first-pay, first served basis and are not confirmed until payment has been received. The initial deadline for entries is Thursday 22nd March.

If you drop out before 22nd March you will of course be refunded, but after that date you should not expect to get your money back. Late dropouts are a pain for everyone - please ensure you do have a full team before entering. Alumni teams are by their very nature a bit disparate and hard to herd, so please be really sure you do have enough committed players!

Similarly, there is a small chance that the division does not get enough teams to go ahead. There will of course be refunds if that's the case, but do perhaps be a little wary of booking unrefundable accommodation etc. If team numbers are very low, we will ask the teams involved whether they would still like to go ahead with the tournament - we don't mind if you want to play with only 4 teams, but equally we are aware that some teams might not be tempted if the division is very small. We should stress though that we do expect the division to run, as it has every other year but we want you to be prepared should the situation arise.
