Inaugural World U23 Championships successful despite setbacks

The first World Under-23 Championships were held in Florence in 2010. Great Britain entered teams in all three divisions, Open, Women's and Mixed. The results were excellent, with the Mixed team winning a Gold medal and the Women managing a very commendable third.


Why the need for under-23?

GB Juniors achieve unprecedented results at WJUC 2010

At the 2010 World Junior Ultimate Championships in Heilbronn, Germany, Great Britain won their first ever medal in a World Championship. The under-20 Open team managed to overcome the home team 16-10 to win bronze. The under-17 boys managed a European silver, losing in sudden death to Germany, while the under-17 girls won bronze as well.

UK Elite Skills Clinic makes successful debut

The first UK Elite Skills Clinic  with coaches from the United States lending their experience not only to British players, but players from across the continent, was held in Loughborough on the weekend of the 26 and 27 June.

GB Ultimate- Team manager announcements

UKU is pleased to announce the following appointments to the various GB Ultimate teams that will compete in 2011-12.

GB Masters 2011-12

GB Masters at EUC 2011 and WUC 2012 will be organised and led by the group: Ben Mitchell, Stu Mitchell and Si Hill.

Beach Ultimate for WCBU 2011:

  • Women: Bex Forth
  • Mixed: Dave Tyler and James Freeman
  • Mixed Masters: Lucy Byrne
  • Masters: Steve Giguere

So far there have been no applications for Open or Grandmasters and we would like to encourage applications for Open in particular.

GB Juniors- Manager and Coach announcements

Congratulations to the following, people who will be running the GB Junior Programme during 2011-12.  Thanks to everyone that applied to support the teams - we received more applications than ever this year.

  • Junior Women: Manager: Gemma Taylor, Coach: Jon Pugh
  • U17 Open: Manager: Andy Vaughan, Coaches: Jolyon Thompson, Tom Candlin
  • U17 Girls: Manager: Chris Flight, Coaches: Tom Howard, Philippa Sturt

UK Ultimate has also employed Ruth Flight on a part-time basis to the role of GB Junior Programme Manager.

UKU Regionals debut to mostly positive response

The 2010 UK Ultimate National Championships underwent a major change this year. For the first time ever, teams had to qualify for Nationals by going through Regional Championships. With the growth of the sport, the UK Ultimate Association sees the introduction of regionals as key to the development of Ultimate.

UKU Nationals 2010

The 2010 UKU National Championships were held in Southampton on 21-22 August. The finalists in both divisions were as expected, with the titles won by Clapham and LeedsLeedsLeeds.

Clapham maintained their grip on the Open title, winning for the 9th consecutive year by dominating Chevron Action Flash in the final 15-5.
