Black Lives Matter

Black Lives Matter.  Do not accept racism.

UK Ultimate recognises as an organisation, and on behalf of the ultimate community in this country, that

  • People have experienced, and do experience racism and discrimination in our sport;
  • We fall short of providing a universally welcoming and diverse home for anyone that wants to join in;
  • We can do better.

Spirit of the Game is an idea that most of us celebrate and care about deeply.  Looking through the prism of Ultimate, failing to discuss or address any discrimination in our sport is like looking at our feet when we’re sure a team-mate has made the wrong call.  We shouldn’t do that.

The UKU board have been discussing how best to respond at this moment, and wanted to meet first to ensure anything that we said included specific action.  Following a board conference call this week, it was agreed by all involved that we should revisit how we can do more to support and build a welcoming and diverse community around our wonderful sport.  UK Ultimate’s long-term plan highlights gender equity as a strategic area of focus.  This is incredibly important, we are making some progress, and we have a long way to go.  But we also determined that with respect to inclusivity, our actions must be broader.  We can, should and will do more to deal with all aspects of diversity and inclusivity in Ultimate in the UK - starting now. We will need your help.

The first step at this point is to make space for listening.

The experience of Black and Ethnic Minorities in UK Ultimate: a forum [hosted by Fowzia Mahmood]

We cannot move forward without acknowledging and addressing the underrepresentation of racial diversity in our sport. In order to do so, we would like to invite players (present and former) in the UK of Black and Minority Ethnic backgrounds to share, discuss and process the impact of Black Lives Matter in their own life and within an Ultimate context. This forum will help inform the decisions we begin to progress with as an organisation.

This forum will exclusively be for players of Black and Minority Ethnic backgrounds. The discussion will be closed and will not be recorded. Anyone who would like to attend but would prefer to be anonymous on the call can edit their name and join without audio/video.

Wed 24th June at 19:30.  Zoom login/dial-in details will be sent by email.

To sign up please complete this short googleform.

Please still register if you would like to attend, but cannot do so on that date, so that we can decide whether to set up one or more additional forums.

It is important to use this time for all players to educate and address racism and privilege in your clubs and personal lives. There are many resources available online, but as a starting point we recommend the following:
