WUGC 2008 - August 6th.

A very important day for GB all round yesterday with some of the closest and most exciting games yet. I'm tired just from watching the updates come in.

GB Mixed started the day against the formidable USA team and came out losing 17-9 but then rallied strongly with a memorable game against the Germans. The Germans have an excellent squad and at 16-16 in sudden death it was anyone's game. The Germans snatched it in the end but it does not affect the final standings and it looks as if GB will get to play Germany in the knockout if they can beat France. GB women had two good wins yesterday beating the young French team and also a few of their old friends from the NZ team. They now face a high scoring Australian side in the knockouts.

The Junior Open team seem to have hit their stride with a very good performance against the third placed Australian team, losing just by two and then beating the Japanese later in the day. Seems they get to play the Australians again this morning so revenge could be on the cards in the knockout. The GB Junior Women performed well against the Canadians but still remain winless. Their games today against the Finnish team is surely their game of the tournament and a chance for them to secure that first win.

The Masters face an uphill struggle to make the top four despite two good wins against the Italians and Germans yesterday. Their tournament depends on results against the Canadians and Americans today who have both performed very strongly to date. A big day for them. Finally the Open team had a very long day yesterday, playing both the Japanese and Canadians. The Japan game went to sudden death but ike the mixed team, they failed to take the final point and lost. Against the Canadians it was very close until the end when the Canadians pulled away to win 17-11. The Open team still have a route to the semi finals though if they can overcome Italy and then gain revenge against the Australians. Still all to play for.

Good luck to all teams!
