UKU Indoor Rules of Ultimate - amendments for 2023-24 season

Thank you to the working group of volunteers, who committed a number of hours over several weeks this summer to review the UKU Indoor pull rules.

This review was initiated by concerns raised to UKU during the 2022-23 Indoor season about the use of guts-style pulls (i.e. a pull thrown hard and fast at head or body height). The use of these pulls raised a number of concerns about safety, deliberate intimidation and questions about the way the rules and SOTG were being applied.

The working group has recommended some amendments to the existing rules starting from the principle that: “the pull is to allow play to start promptly with the defence throwing a valid pull without ‘excessive force’. The pull should reach the receiving end zone at a catchable height and should normally be caught.” (rule 7.1.1)

Having spent some time reviewing other Indoor rulesets, phrasing from the German Indoor rules has been adopted restricting the use of ‘excessive force’, a definition of which can be found in the appendix to the UKU Indoor rules.

The amended rules will be used in 2023-24, effective immediately, and reviewed at the end of this Indoor season. Further changes may be discussed if we remain concerned about the use of pulls that are dangerous to players and/or spectators, that deliberately aim to intimidate, cause damage to the disc, or if there are other reasons the rules requires adjustment. We hope the amended rules will promote a better experience for all and allow the game to flow.

The current UKU Indoors Rules of Ultimate can be found here.
