“Spirit of the Game is the mindful behaviour practiced by players worldwide prior to, during and after a game. It encompasses attitudes and skills such as good knowledge and application of the rules, fair-mindedness, safe play, and spatial awareness, clear and calm communication, and positive and respectful attitude towards teammates, fans, and opponents, in a mutual effort to protect the basic joy of play.”

— World Flying Disc Federation

Spirit of the Game is an overarching term used to describe the way that participants approach the sport of Ultimate. It encompasses core principles of sporting values, knowledge and fair application of the rules, attitude, communication skills, and respect for others. It is critical that players, coaches and fans alike adhere to these principles.

All players should familiarise themselves with the WFDF Rules of Ultimate. Spirit of the Game is, quite literally, the first rule in the book.

In addition to players’ individual responsibilities, teams are encouraged to appoint a Spirit Captain to help uphold Spirit of the Game.

UKU is committed to fostering the principles of Spirit of the Game at all levels. The Spirit of the Game Committee facilitates this by engaging with development, education and outreach, from grassroots to national teams.

We will maintain Spirit of the Game as the underlying principle in everything we do.

School Ultimate

Spirit of the Game is just as important at school-level Ultimate, whether played in after school clubs, School Games events or UKU Junior competition.

Children love the responsibility placed upon them to uphold the rules and promote sporting values so that they don’t let their teammates down. Spirit of the Game offers opportunities for children to develop a range of social, emotional and communication skills as well as sportsmanship.
